MIND YOUR HEART WINS NATIONAL AWARD

Mind Your Heart has won a national award for its work with mental health organisations. We were given the ‘good practice’ award by Public Health Wales at a meeting of their Awards Panel on 4th October.

The National Award and Quality Mark is given for public health programmes that demonstrate they meet set criteria for planning, delivery, sustainability and evaluation. Mind Your Heart is the smallest programme to have been given the award to date.

Assembly Member, Elin Jones, said: “I’m very pleased that this innovative programme has been recognised with a national award. I know that a lot of hard work has gone into developing this programme and I congratulate everyone who’ve ensured that it is a success in promoting good mental and physical health in Ceredigion”.

Jan Batty, the programme worker, said: “I hope that everyone who has supported the programme and contributed to its success will feel as honoured as I do to receive this award. It is recognition of the hard work of those involved and the enthusiasm and interest of all the voluntary organisations, clients, GP practices and teams in mental health services”.

‘Say ‘I’m Fine’…and Mean It!’ – a New Handbook for Carers in Ceredigion

Mind Your Heart has been involved in the production of a new, free handbook for carers in Ceredigion which focuses on mental health and emotional wellbeing. Caring can be very rewarding, but is also a demanding job.  The Council’s Carers Development Officer felt there was a need for a short, practical booklet that focused on the important subject of health and wellbeing and brought in Mind Your Heart to help.

‘Say ‘I’m Fine’…and Mean It!’ encourages carers to look after themselves as well as they look after the person they care for.  It acknowledges the difficult feelings carers may have and gives guidance on how, and where, to go for help and support. It was written in consultation with carers groups and launched during Carers Week in June by Mark Williams MP, a Parliamentary Ambassador for Carers Week 2011. The official launch included inspiring stories and a short meditation. It was followed by a Wellbeing Workshop for carers.

If you are a carer in Ceredigion, or work with carers, and would like copies of the handbook, please contact me at jan.batty@wales.nhs.uk or 01570 423957.
